Master's program Multilingual Educational Linguistics - MOTION

The MOTION master’s program combines both a linguistic and educational perspective on multilingual individuals and societiesand was introduced following the training program for teachers of children with different mother tongues (“Zusatzausbildung für Lehrerinnen und Lehrer von Schülerinnen und Schülern verschiedener Muttersprachen”), which was on offer from 1980.

The University of Hamburg enjoys a unique position in multilingualism research nation-wide, providing students with the opportunity to incorporate various aspects of current multilingualism research into their studies. The following questions are pursued via a number of disciplines:

  • To what extent can the migration-based multilingualism in metropolitan areas be transformed into an individual and societal resource?
  • Which positive effects can/does multilingualism have on the individual and on society as a whole?

The master’s program “Multilingual Education Linguistics” brings together courses from a number of faculties, allowing students to gain insights into current interdisciplinary approaches to multilingualism in urban areas. Students acquire the ability to work independently with academic methods and findings, and to apply their knowledge and problem-solving skills in both pedagogical and linguistic contexts. Simultaneously, practice-based modules offer students direct insights into multilingual situations and related challenges within educational institutions and in public life.
